On a gas tank, no hot water usually means the pilot is out, and the pilot being out usually means a thermocouple that is no longer proving the flame is lit, so the gas valve shuts it down as designed. Less often it is the gas control valve itself. On an electric tank, no hot water at all almost always means the upper thermostat or upper heating element has failed, since the upper element governs the whole tank — a failed lower element instead just means hot water runs out faster than it used to, which is a different problem with a different fix.
It is worth telling those two complaints apart when you call: no hot water at all is a different diagnostic path than not enough hot water or hot water that runs out quickly. Describing which one you have, along with whether the tank is gas or electric, lets a fair amount get narrowed down before a truck rolls, even though confirming it always takes hands on the tank.
